Smart and sustainable at Fyrtornet
In collaboration with the City of Malmö, we carried out an extensive reuse project that demonstrates how smart, sustainable solutions can go hand in hand with both function and aesthetics. Guided by the architect’s vision and color scheme, we created a comprehensive solution for Kulturhyllan (formerly Kulturfyren), where both existing and reused furniture were given new life.

Updating existing furniture
Some of the client’s original furniture was repainted to fit the new color concept. In addition, we delivered carefully selected reused pieces and created new ones in our own carpentry workshop using reclaimed materials and Valchromat. Valchromat is an environmentally friendly material thanks to a manufacturing process where wood fibers are bonded with naturally colored resins—offering both durability and the opportunity for creative design without compromising the environment.
Custom adaptations
To meet Malmö City's specific needs, we also adapted certain pieces—such as resizing adult chairs to suit children. This serves as a clear example of how reuse can also be flexible and functional.
The City of Malmö summarizes the collaboration like this:
"Many reuse suppliers make big promises but fail to deliver. Finding a supplier that meets expectations is essential for making reuse work—and that’s exactly what Yllw/Soeco has done. Reuse is like a perishable good—what’s available today may be gone tomorrow. Bringing together all the elements of a project—color schemes and functional requirements for furniture—is no easy task. But we’re extremely pleased with the end result—not least from an environmental perspective."
This project shows that when design, sustainability, and flexibility come together, reuse can become a powerful tool for the public spaces of the future.
